Carrying children -
our thoughts on closeness

Björn Jakobson, founder of BabyBjörn, said in 1973 that ”carrying your newborn on your chest is like floating on a cloud.” And it is this very sentiment that lay the ground for our thinking behind how we carry our children. Our goal with all BABYBJÖRN Baby Carriers is quite simply that parents should love carrying their child in a baby carrier – and that baby should love being carried by his or her mom or dad.

Our baby carriers are designed specifically to strengthen that essential closeness between parent and child – where the child’s comfort is our guiding light. This means that baby is carried high up on mom or dad’s chest – a position that is as snug for baby as it is for the parent. We also place great emphasis on such details as the ease in which a baby carrier can be put on – even in the middle of the night, without assistance. And that placing baby in and taking baby out of the baby carrier can be done without waking baby. These are just some of the reasons why pediatricians and child psychologists recommend our baby carriers all over the world. Furthermore, they are involved in the process of developing our baby carriers to make certain they are safe, ergonomically comfortable and functional.

    Security from day one

Newborn babies have an enormous need for closeness in the form of body and eye contact with mom and dad during their first months of life. When you carry your newborn baby in a baby carrier high up on your chest and close to you, you are helping him or her through the overwhelming transition from life in the womb to life in the outside world. The warmth of your body, the sound of your heartbeat and your voice are familiar and comforting. Closeness to you represents a calm haven in a world full of new impressions and teaches your newborn to feel trust and security.

Baby carriers suited to all needs

Our very first baby carrier, called ’Close to the Heart’, was introduced as far back as 1973. Since then the concept has developed and grown into a whole family of baby carriers – from a baby carrier perfectly suited to the needs of a newborn baby all the way up to a baby carrier designed for parents who want to carry their child up until the age of 2 (at most 31 lbs/14 kg).
